Former NFL tight end, Zeron Flemister sustained an injury that he ultimately used to begin a new career as a personal trainer.
Flemister spent much of his life playing sports. Though his school sports included football, basketball and track and field, his dream was to play in the NFL. He attained his dream and during six seasons he played for Washington, New England and Oakland.
He credits the coaches at West High School in Iowa City, Iowa for their part in preparing him for a career in the NFL and learning to compete. “Do what you can, try as hard as you can, the rest will take care of itself,” he remembers his coaches telling him.
He also says that a steadfast work ethic helped him achieve his goals.
Flemister’s career began with the Washington Redskins in 2000 after being signed as an undrafted free agent. He spent four years with the Redskins before moving to the New England Patriots. A torn Achilles tendon prevented him from playing with the team when they won the 2004 Super Bowl.
His final time in the NFL was spent with the Oakland Raiders during 2005 and he officially retired from the NFL in 2007.
The torn Achilles heel he suffered in 2004 eventually led to his new profession as a personal trainer. During rehabilitation efforts he met a personal trainer for the Denver Bronco’s and was offered a job after he had healed. He says years of working with different strength coaches gave him an edge in the business because he already knew so many training methods.
Flemister started with Next Level Sports and later moved to Ignition Performance Training in Denver in 2009. He now specializes in sports rehabilitation, speed training as well as speed training and Olympic lifting. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is CPR/First Aid certified.
